LOCATION: Blythe Valley Industrial Park, Solihull

PROJECT: Installation of a newt barrier to protect Grey crested newts

Background

Apleona, our client are responsible for creating a new Head Quarters in Solihull for ZF Group, formerly known as TRW.

As a part of the overall Blythe Valley development they have created pools to restore all of the newts and wildlife on the site. Part of the planning consent was to ensure none of the Great Crested Newts were protected and have no access to the site.

Grey crested newts are European protected species and their habitats are fully protected by law, so a development which risks disturbing them can only go ahead if approval plans are made to relocate them to switchable habitat.

Outcome

Ten Construction were approached by the client to install a newt barrier which is 600ml above ground, 200ml below ground supported by wooden stakes. The overall perimeter of the newt barrier was 1,000 metres, protecting 46,000 sq. metres of development land.
